Day 15 - Sun - 11/16/2025 - Cherbourg, France
The alarm went off at 7:30am and we were already docked in Cherbourg. No matter, we didn't stir until after 8:15am. It was dark and rainy. We ate breakfast in a fairly quiet Lido before gathering up our things for the day. I did forget my umbrella and that would come back to haunt me.
We scanned off the ship on deck 5, and were immediately greeted by significant rain showers that drenched us by the time we reached the terminal. We purchased 4€ all day shuttle pass tickets and boarded an articulated bus. It was hard to see because of the foggy windows. At the first stop just past McDonald's and by the train station, the driver shooed us all off for some reason. We walked along the waterway to the next stop in the rain and decided to take the shuttle back to the ship and wait out the rain.
Back at the terminal we visited the lobby of the museum and aquarium. It's filled with all kinds of underwater research equipment and interesting in its own right without visiting the museum. We had previously visited the museum in 2016. We scanned back on the ship and I retrieved the umbrella and we left a few items behind.
The rain appeared to have stopped and we could see much more from the bus ride this time. We also got off at the second stop. From there we made our way to the Basilica Holy Trinity (in English). It has beautiful carvings and stained glass. Afterwards we found the nearby Napoleon's Statute before strolling back through town towards Carrefour grocery store which was closed like many businesses on this Sunday. We then made our way to McDonald's and discovered the McRib was on the menu. While slightly different than its American cousin it was good. We then walked back to the bus stop and just missed a bus by a few seconds. The next one was about 20 minutes later, and fortunately it wasn't raining.
This terminal was the same one that the Cherbourg boarding Titanic passengers left from. The luggage room is pretty impressive. Back on the ship we found our friends, JoAnn & Gary in the Vines bar, and chatted with them about our respective days. We got to see an Irish ferry depart while sitting there.
We returned to our room to watch the sailaway which was just before 6 pm, but it was already dark.
After dinner, David Knight performed his hypnosis act. He was on the previous Emerald Princess cruise and the act was a copy of that. Afterwards we listened to Mockingbird's ABBA set before returning to the room to see if our Seahawks would be on TV. They weren't. Angela went to her late night karaoke session and I assumed a prone position in bed.
We have two sea days ahead of us before reaching Vigo which we missed on the previous segment. Will we miss it again and 5 containers of supplies? Time will tell.
